The Examiner

MR JOHN HUMPHRIES

John Humphries was born in Sheffield and read Music at Oxford University. Subsequently he attended the Guildhall School of Music where he studied the natural horn with Anthony Halstead. His editions of horn music have been performed by many of the world’s leading horn players including Barry Tuckwell, Michael Thompson, Eric Ruske, Anthony Halstead, Stephen Stirling, Javier Bonet and Frank Lloyd and his reconstructions of Mozart’s incomplete horn concerto movements have been praised for their “polish, authenticity, good scholarship and talent”.
He is also well known as an arranger: one of his arrangements appears on the legendary London Horn Sound CD whole others have been played world-wide by the Wallace Collection. His arrangements for young players appear on all the main examination syllabuses in UK. As a writer, he has contributed booklet notes for many CDs and programme notes for hundred of concerts. He has contributed articles and reviews for the Horn Players, the Horn Magazine Historic Brass Society Journal and Brass Bulletin. His book, the Early Horn, was described as “a superb book” “packed with usefulness.” “Rarely can anything have been written on the early history of the horn that is quite as accessible and flowing.
John has been a brass examiner for Guildhall since 1986, but since the merger with Trinity has retrained as generalist examiner and thoroughly enjoys the diversity of his new role. He lives in Ewell with his wife, son and daughter and his hobbies include collecting brass instruments and repairing them.

First of all, I on behalf of the three important instructors YHH, Kevin Ng and Simon Song to give a fullest appreciation of the commitment involved, effort as well as the enthusiastic heart for the Intermediate Recital Certificate of Trinity Guildhall Band Ensemble which will be held on 8th Nov 9am at the RRSSB room. I would like to wish all of you who has participated in the ensemble the best of luck and may God bless you. Last but not least, I would like to apologize for not attending the practices held before the real exam date due to my packed schedule that did not allowed me to fit in any slots, here I would sure to conduct with joyful and confident for the 5 repertoires that will be performing during the ensemble.
