The Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) Band was set up in November 2005 by Miss Chan Siew Ngo, ACEO of Riam Education Management. There were only 35 young members and the Band debuted in public for the first time four months after it was set up.
In 2006, the RRSS Band performed in several occasions which included the Miri City Day Parade, The Mass Aerobics held by Maxis and the National Day Parade in Kuching.
RRSSB had its first exposure to the battlefield in the year 2007 when it started to established with only 48 members in 2005. Within one year the band could achieve the unexpected result in the State level marching band competition. They achieved 4th in the competition which others 5 bands competing were veteran bands. After the State Level Competition, the band was dubbed 'Bruin's Brass' as to follow the spirit of the Bruin and making beautiful music with brass instruments.
Due to the financial problem this has set them unable to participate the following year competition which held outside Miri. RRSSB took this opportunity to improve in their marching skills and music. They were coached by Mr U-jin Lim, National Regional Manager of Trinity Guildhall Malaysia. On November 8th 2008, the band took the Trinity Guildhall Intermediate Recital Certificate Examination and performed all 5 repertoires. The exam was examined by Sir John Humphries. They achieved Distinction of 92/100 marks.
After a year of reinforcement, these band members' enthusiasm and insisting on perfection efforts have proposed again to the management to allowed them to participate the coming competition again in May 2009. Budget has been collected through sponsors, schools and parents. Though, lots of obstacle few times fall the bands decision, somehow, never distort the band to give up. Finally in 2009, the band has stand up and pour in a lot of effort and spirit in the band to be able to compete in the field. A tremendous improvement and quality in terms of sounds and drills have been enriched. The band came to a massive result of Silver Award, 64.1 marks. Apart from that, Eddie Ng, has emerged to be the Best Drum Major of the state that year.

The band has increased its members this year and they decided to put on a new aim. More intensives and trainings from all coaches and Mr U-jin Lim. This year, they have put on a strong spirit to present all their 9 repertoires for the Trinity Guildhall Advanced Certificate Examination. And yet the result is satisfied, reaching the Distinction level with 87/100 marks.
The troop has undergone a complete makeover and they introduced 12 colour guards under the coaching of Mr Mohd Hezrul. The band has worked hard under one heart one dream. Finally on 1st July this year, the band took the field and their journey has shown to the people nationwide. The 8th placing during the Sarawak Zone Preliminary Round in NATCOMP 2010 was a great recognition to all. Despite of the dropping placing in the Finals list, the band has never sounded a voice of giving up. Yet, this is a experienced journey for all members and coaches, a reminder for a better and improved crew. During the NATCOMP 2010 held recently, the band achieved an award of 58.2 marks, marking the Top 4 band in Sarawak. The band is now the Top 12 Band nationwide.
The RRSS Band now comprises of 90 over members, with 75% of the members in the junior classes. With out motto 'Practice Makes Perfect' and 'Excellence is our Commitment', the RRSS Band is the fastest growing band in Miri.
The Bruin's Brass is now lead by Team Managers cum Club Advisors, Madam Yapa Menike, Mr Johnne Mui and Mr David Low of RIT institute, Band Instructor Miss Tay Kai Yee, with Coaches, Mr Derek Kho Jr, Mr Yong Huan Hui, Mr Simon Song and Mr Kevin Ng. The RRSS Band aims to be one of the best, if not the Best Brass Band in this part of the world.
